Sport has always had an important role to play at Moor Allerton, with a healthy rivalry between the school’s 2 houses, Bruce and Cromwell, and plenty of competition and friendly fixtures with local schools. Some past pupils have even gone on to achieve sporting success at national level. From school sports days to the outstanding sporting achievements of school teams and individuals, it’s a sporting tradition which continues to this day.

One passion which has run through the decades at Moor Allerton is that of football. The teams and squads best documented in the school archive are those of the middle decades, between the 60s and the 80s, and here you can see a gallery of teams from this period.

Only a few have records of the actual pupils. So if you are on those line-ups, or you recognise any of the faces, then please leave a reply and let us know.

Likewise, if you have any footballing photos from this or any other period of the school’s history, please let us have them so we can add to the gallery.

To go along with the post from earlier in the year – Ashes to Ashes – Cricket stars of the future… from the past! – we’ve found some more undated cricket 11 line-ups. These are possibly from 1970, 1971 and 1982 respectively – but if you are able to date these more accurately; if you recognise any of the faces in the teams; or better still, if you are one of those boys, we’d love to hear from you. 1988 Line Ups

February 27th, 2014 | Posted by ma100admin in 1980s | All work and no play.... | Sports teams - (0 Comments)

In 1988, there was a lot happening at Moor Allerton, as these various line-ups of sports teams and musical groups taken in the summer term show.

The Ashes winter tour of Australia by the England cricket team in Moor Allerton’s centenary year is probably best forgotten (unless you are Australian!) But here are four sets of likely lads from the 1970s who look like they could have given the current England team a run for their money.

Are you in one of the lineups, or do you know anyone who is? Please let us know so we can put names to the faces and include reminiscences of leather against willow.

Further line-ups can be viewed at Ashes to Ashes – Part 2.

Keeping things right up-to-date, here’s some recent press coverage of Moor Allerton’s super-successful football achievements from the end of last term. Moor Allerton – Champions of Manchester – still making history!

It perhaps seems strange to think of a sport like boxing being one of the key physical activities taking place at Moor Allerton. But it was, certainly up until at least 1948, as this ticket shows. Did you box for or against Moor Allerton, or maybe you had a parent or grandparent who did? We’d love to find out more…

This programme is from 1939 – the final one before the school was closed temporarily during World War II.

1936_Sports_Cov_ImHere’s a selection of sports day programmes dating back to 1936 and 1938 – a fine afternoon of events taking place in 1936 – including a full programme of boxing!

Sports-day-1963With our minds on the up-coming sports day(s) during the summer term, here’s a great selection of photos showing how they did it 50 years ago at Moor Allerton in 1963.

Among the athletes shown are Peter Phillips, Malcolm Gow, Ric Burslem, Henry Pugh, Colin Pugh and Ian Slater. If you are, or know any of these boys, then we’d love to hear from you and your memories of the day.

We’ve quite a number of sports team line-ups in the archive. Here’s one of the football team from 1981, in which we are able to put names to the full line-up. If you’re on the picture, get in touch – tell us what you are up to now and what memories you had of playing in the team!
